Clyro Hill Farm

Our small family consists of Tony and Sally Herdman, both forty something farmers, and our7 year old son Penry. Tony is the poultryman, shepherd, cowman, hay-maker and general labourer. Sally dresses the poultry, grows the vegetables, does the admin and paperwork and occasionally the housework! Penry plays his part, settling in the day-old chicks and helping to shepherd the animals into their housing at night!

Our farm overlooks the Wye Valley and the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is in Powys, close to the border of Herefordshire.

We serve our community with direct sales and we attend the local Farmers Markets. We also sell organic free range eggs locally.

As conservation and protecting the environment is high on our list of priorities, the farm is in the Tir Gofal conservation scheme. This is a scheme, funded by the Countryside Council for Wales, for management of the different micro habitats which occur around the farm.

We believe that modern methods of food processing allow contamination to enter the food chain via chemicals, preservatives, additives, colourings, flavourings as well as unsafe imported foods and reformed meat. We offer all our meat as fresh, oven ready joints. They are full of natural taste and goodness and do not need chemical enhancements or additives.

Organic farming is a sustainable system, which is independently audited, provides full traceability of the food produced and can be trusted. It is a system which puts animal welfare, conservation of the environment and human health foremost.

Our animals are all kept in small, herd or flock sizes, have daily access to fresh water and pasture and are allowed to follow their natural behaviour patterns. The soil is managed on a low input basis, and therefore the outputs are likely to be lower than conventional farming, but chemicals and pesticides are not required and the balance of nature is maintained.
