As with the chickens, the turkeys are kept in flock sizes of only 100. There are white and, for those who like the more traditional taste, bronze feathered turkeys. Significantly, our turkeys are free-range as well as organic, not barn reared.July starts the Christmas turkey season, with the arrival of our day-old chicks. They are housed in mobile sheds, which are moved regularly, and for the first 4 weeks are brooded under electric heaters. Their feed is an organic cereal-based pellet which is fed ad-lib.Once allowed out, turkeys really do believe in free-ranging. It is quite a sight to see 100 turkeys setting off, as if on a route march, to another part of the farm! Making sure they are all in at night, takes a while. At times, we have left it a bit late and found some rather large ghostly figures, roosting in the hay barn!Because of the variety of their daily life, these birds do not spend all day eating and therefore grow slowly and mature naturally. This, combined with sufficient hanging at Christmas, rewards us with a very fine flavoured Christmas dinner. All the turkeys are hand plucked and dressed on the farm, to avoid any stress. There is guidance on cooking times on our recipes page.order form
